The aim of creating the Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary is to bring Icelandic closer to all people interested in the language and Iceland in general.
The Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary is mainly intended for Czech and Slovak students of Icelandic, both beginners and advanced, to whom it offers complex phonetic, morphological and syntactic information as well as a vocabulary necessary for active and passive usage sufficient to study the language at university. The Dictionary is also intended for all people interested in Icelandic and Iceland, to whom it offers encyclopaedic information, an introduction to phonetics and grammar and a huge number of photographs and illustrations. Although the Dictionary is primarily aimed at the needs of Czech and Slovak users, it also contains a lot of information that can help Icelandic users, e.g. more than 11 000 synonyms and antonyms, translations of examples, etc.
The vocabulary initially came from the Concise Icelandic-English Dictionary (Hólmarsson, Sanders and Tucker 2007), but it has been substantially extended due to the access to the quality and modern web-based project ISLEX (Úlfarsdóttir 2016). A considerable number of headwords has been added at the suggestion of the users of the online version of the Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary. The Dictionary contains 53823 headwords with meanings or phrases.
The Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary is primarily an online dictionary freely available on the website www.hvalur.org. The printed version of the Dictionary is published at the person's own expense. Most of the 40 copies printed are intended for libraries and institutions in the Czech Republic, in Slovakia and in Iceland, remaining copies are for the authors and the public. Both the PDF version for offline headword searching and the PDF version for home printing are freely available for download on the Dictionary website.
The Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary is an open and free project that has been created by many co-authors (see the following chapter “History of Creating the Icelandic-Czech Students' Dictionary“) who I want to thank on behalf of the authors. I also want to thank all the users of the online version of the Dictionary for their patience, their goodwill and all their comments and suggestions. I want to thank in particular Petr Mikeš, Adam Kožoušek and Samoriela for their unshakable faith in our project. Big thanks also go to our families and friends who have afforded us the opportunity to give our time to the Dictionary. Special thanks go to my wife Dorotka who has supported me for years and has shared the enthusiasm with me.
